Williamsport Elderly is an 11-story high-rise situated in the historic logging town of Williamsport, PA. The property houses more than 100 affordable housing residents, most of whom are 75 years or older. Better Tomorrows, a national nonprofit providing social services to affordable housing communities, has partnered with Williamsport Elderly to make active senior living a priority on this property. Through community outreach, health-related initiatives, and educational opportunities, Better Tomorrows provides residents with a variety of activities on a daily basis. One more exciting opportunity has taken shape in the form of an annual Bake-Off sponsored by Better Tomorrows in conjunction with the Williamsport Elderly Tenant Association.
This year, Better Tomorrows invited representatives from local agencies to judge the Bake-Off on Thursday, February 27, 2014. Official judges included: State Representative Rick Mirabito, Williamsport Bureau Fire Inspector Sam Aungst, Williamsport Bureau Police Chief Gregory Foresman, Albright LIFE Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Albarano, Elder Law Attorney James Malee, STEP Office of the Aging Coordinator Tammy Fry, and Janet Shannon of Interstate Realty Management a subsidiary of The Michaels Organization. Prizes were distributed to winners following the event. Priscilla G. H. earned the title of 1st place for her Hawaiian Cake. Mary Jane K. and Lela Y. earned 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. In addition to their titles and bragging rights, each of these winners received a gift card to Walmart.
Organizers viewed this year’s Bake-Off as a success. It drew a large crowd on the day of the event, and encouraged community participation. The event is sure to have fortified external partnerships between local agencies and Williamsport Elderly.
Williamsport Elderly is owned and managed by Interstate Realty Management, a subsidiary of The Michaels Organization, which has a strategic partnership with Better Tomorrows to provide supportive services to all its residents.
