On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke headlined a city-sponsored initiative to rename a section of North 20th Street in North Philadelphia "Jackie Jones Way," in honor of Jacqueline T. Jones, a 26-year social service provider and visionary.
The celebration was attended by over one hundred community members and included moving speeches by Philadelphia City Council President Darrell Clarke, The Michaels Organization founder and CEO Michael J. Levitt, and The Michaels Organization President Emeritus Bob Greer. Following the speeches, a crowd gathered on North 20th Street, as city workers installed the new sign emblazoned with Jackie Jones’ name.
After the installation, community members continued the celebration at Jackie's Garden, an affordable housing development where Jones first worked after joining The Michaels Organization’s Interstate Reality Management, a property management company serving low- and mixed-income communities across the country. In 2012, The Michaels Organization renamed the apartment community, formerly known as Montgomery Gardens, “Jackie's Garden” to honor her commitment to bettering the community.
Jones employed a unique approach to helping affordable housing residents thrive. She combined her knowledge of social services with her management work to build a safer, more supportive community that fostered resident empowerment. In 2013, the social services pioneered by Jones and Interstate Realty Management became the non-profit organization now known as Better Tomorrows. The organization provides an expansive array of comprehensive supportive services to more than 121 communities across the country. Better Tomorrows staff members serve residents just as Jones did: they work directly in community centers located in affordable housing developments, allowing for direct access to the populations served, and programming that is convenient, cost-effective, and outcome-driven.
Known as an "oasis in the city," Jackie's Garden is now the site of numerous supportive services for youth, seniors, and families. In many ways, Jackie’s Garden has become a model for programs provided by Better Tomorrows. “We are proud to continue and improve upon the amazing programs that Jackie helped build,” noted Rebecca Tone, President and CEO of Better Tomorrows, “This street naming is a testament to the legacy and impact Jackie had on Philadelphia and the residents she served.”
