This past school year, families, staff, and students at Abbey Lane Apartments in Winter Haven came together for a graduation event marking the end of Better Tomorrows’ 2024–2025 After-School Program, made possible through the support of the GiveWell Community Foundation.

Grant funding provided students with pencils, paper, markers, and craft supplies, which they used to complete homework, create art projects, and explore hands-on activities in science, reading, health, and movement. Healthy snacks and drinks were offered each afternoon, helping students stay energized and focused while supporting overall wellness throughout the program.

Beyond the supplies, the program offered a safe and structured space for youth ages 5 to 13. Children had the opportunity to learn, explore, and spend time with friends, while parents could feel confident their kids were cared for in a nurturing community setting.

One student’s story illustrates the impact of the program. A fourth grader who had been struggling with reading received personalized support, steadily improving in fluency and comprehension, and by the end of the year was reading confidently and independently. Stories like this were reflected across the program: on average, students advanced by a full grade level in reading within six months. Teachers also reported better attendance, stronger academic performance, and more positive engagement in the classroom. Beyond academics, children developed greater curiosity, confidence, and enthusiasm for learning, showing how consistent support and hands-on opportunities can make a real difference.

Abbey Lane Apartments is home to many families who do not always have access to after-school programs. With the support of the GiveWell Community Foundation, Better Tomorrows was able to provide the resources and guidance that help students thrive both in school and in their everyday lives.
